The problem with Moyes is twofold;

He doesn't know what his 1st XI is, and

He's way too tactically negative.

I think the second issue needs solving first which then might lead to him figuring out the first. Start playing a more attacking line-up, instead of 3 holding midfielders versus an ordinary side, and then he might just discover that playing a more offensive game can lead to positive outcomes.

Can't see it, he's got to get us in Europe first. I aint counting this conference league bollocks. We'll be out of that the moment we meet a team that falls out of the arse of the EL.

Soucek had a decent game, nearly scored a couple of times and put in some excellent tackles that broke up some of the better Bournemouth attacks while Downes was looking lost in their half and Rice was going his best not to get injured for the world cup. You can't play three fucking holding midfielders though, that's ridiculous.

What is your prediction of what the magical Moyes is going to achieve this season that is going to spark this huge humble pie eating session?

I'll have a guess at FUCK ALL. The bloke is fucking clueless. Sacked in January. Too late of course.

Said that for a while re Soucek. Play Downes deeper because he can clearly pass a ball better than Soucek and allow Soucek to meander forward. That will free up space for Scamacca as a centre back will have to keep an eye on Soucek.

BRANDED,

I think they’ll be a fair few on here eating humble pie towards the end of the season regarding wanting Moyes out.

I think we’re improving from the second half of last year. We’ve improved defensively and we’re starting to get the wins. I’m expecting an excellent second half of the season.

I thought Soucek had a poor first half and did much better in the second half. His inclusion at the moment is important as we lack height with Kehrer playing CB rather than a more traditional/taller CB.

Agreed re Downes not sure why he has been playing in the number 10 role as I thought he was an out and out DM. I would rather have seen Soucek pushed up and given licence to be a nuisance and get in the box without worrying about tracking back.

Once our defence is sorted and pacqueta is back, I would like to see Soucek on the bench.

Thought Soucek had a good game and would have had the goal if Zouma hadn't nicked it.

Of course those with an agenda will highlight a misplaced pass rather than the multiple tackles, interceptions and break up of plays. His aerial ability is important in both defense and attack.
He was better than Downes on the night but Downes was played in a strange position.

Bournemouth were really poor opposition though so made it easier than many other sides we have faced.

don't necessarily disagree with any of that; my point is that i'm more than happy for Johnson to be a (dependable) back up on both sides. Which is fundamentally what he is. Of course we'd all want more quality on the ball from him, but i'm not looking to our full backs to retain possession and run the game. The problems there exist far more in other areas of the pitch, and as you say, Soucek is one of the worst.

Honestly, I'm not particularly obsessed with attacking full backs. Newcastle have Brighton's 4th choice centre half playing at left back and they seem to be doing ok, and have one of the highest possession stats in the league, because they run the game from other areas of the pitch. And because they have a defender at full back, their defensive record is excellent. Man for man, we're arguably a better side than they are ( I don't think anyone on here would have taken Joelinton, Longstaff, Willock, Burn, Schar etc etc) but they're a far better unit at present.
Attacking full backs like Cancelo and TRENT are all well and good if you're dominating. We aren't and rarely do. If our full backs can kick it 70 yards, that's about right for how we play.

"if we were a team that dominates possession, I'd be concerned about all of that. But we're not"

Well we don't dominate possession because we have 2 or 3 that are shit on the ball and can't find a teammate when under pressure. At Anfield last week that first half we were woeful, 208 passes we made of which just 77% were accurate. Johnson is one of them, the other main one is Soucek. Johnson seems to look nervous this season, his first touch usually hinders him rather then helps him, he'll ping a ball down the line over Bowen's head to their defence at least 5 times a game. He used to be effective going forward so you'd forgive it a bit, this season doesn't seem to possess any pace to beat a LB or put in a decent cross.

For a team that focuses mainly on full backs when attacking, they should be one of the main targets to upgrade in Jan/next summer. Along with a Soucek replacement.

I though Johnson was very good 1st half but faded badly on the hour.

I like Soucek, but Downes should replace him for the moment. Fornals and then Paqueta when fit to take the AFM place.

No arguments with the subs last night. Bowen didn't do much and Scammacca and Downes were running out of puff. Antonio was utter gash, Coufal did well.

We are a shadow of the side from the previous 2 season because although there have been many performances like last night nobody in their right mind minds winning ugly if they are in between games where you are playing great football and blowing teams away
Honestly this season we haven’t really played well in a single game. 60 mins at forest a half against spuds villa and the bin dippers. We’ve been pretty woeful in the rest.
In this league if you stand still you’re going backwards massively team nullify your strengths and learn your weakness and we have not evolved in three season one single bit.
We’ve still got Soucek lumbering around midfield miss placing passes hoping he Nick a goal here and there to justify his place in the team same with fornals. Virtually every successful team on the planet has quick attaching full backs we don’t despite him buying 3 since moyes came.
Scammaca is Haller Mkll if it wasn’t so ludicrous it would be laughable that you sell a player because he clearly doesn’t fit the way you set up you wait two and a half years to replace him with EXACTLY the same player.
Whilst I think scamnaca and Paqueta are probably both very good players I’ve seen absolutely nothing to suggest either can succeed under this manager unless Moyes has a complete turn around and wants to play a possession based game which I’m not sure is in his locker.
Like spuds our game currently seems to rely on keeping it tight and hope our two players deliver in rice has a stormer or Bowen comes up with a bit of magic or we score from a set piece. There’s no real pattern to our play from what I see. I mean is there another person on the planet that thinks Downes is a No.10 other than the manager??? Truly bizarre decision. Against shit counts like Bournemouth you could easily stick Antonio out wide left and play Benny in there and really go after them like we were in the previous two season where Benny has played the No.10 very well.
I’m hoping he’s waiting for the morrocan kid to come back and we can start playing out and having a proper left footer out there will add some balance to the team but I won’t hold my breath.
For me Moyes has enough in the bank to see the season out and tbf we’ve had key injuries in a key area of the team at centrehalf. If by the end of the season it’s the same approach then for me they need to be asking him serious question about where he thinks he’s driving this team

Johnsons biggest issue is his confidence and the hesitancy he has on the ball. He struggles to make decisions takes too long on the ball and then has to make an awkward simple pass. He seems terrified of making a mistake. For a defender with two good feet this is frustrating as he has the potential to be really effective.
The difference with Cresswell is night and day. He is already looking at where there are runners and space before he receives the ball and isn't afraid to take one touch and whip the ball in or a quick pass and move. He isn't afraid of making a mistake and conceding possession or of his position on the pitch.

Against a team like Bournemouth who were playing narrow and blocking up the middle there were lots of opportunities to push up, get in and put crosses in. I felt Cresswell and Benrahma did a good job on the left but Bowen and Johnson less so on the right.

Coufal comes on, gets forward tries to cut the ball back and wins a penalty. You make your own luck. Bowen had always cut in on his left and made it easy for them to block shots and passes.

Really disappointed with Antonios recent performances. He seems to go to ground so often that refs don't even give fouls now when it's a genuine foul. Didn't see any urgency or effort to show why he should be given more minutes. I'm sure he will start the European match but I'd like to see a player that is hungry and wants to prove he's an option not a lazy diving lump that strolls around the pitch. He seems to have lost the desire that made him a Premier league player and our main striker.
